Laying carpet flooring - what is the best way?

Hello everyone! I want to lay carpet flooring in my room soon. There is one in there now, but it is very old and not really nice anymore! That's why I want to tear it out and buy a new one... Only I don’t know exactly how to install it best! There are carpets you buy in pieces and then glue them down, right? The one I have now, however, is in one piece in my room, it has been there since I got the apartment! Are there also carpets available in one piece, and if so, how do I best lay them?
