Hello everyone,

I want to convert part of the garden behind the house into a terrace with porcelain stoneware tiles. I have removed about 25cm of soil. Now 18cm of gravel will go on top, followed by 5cm of grit. Then 2cm thick porcelain stoneware tiles supported by grit pedestal supports. The joints will remain open.

Since it will be about 55m² and not small, I would like to do everything properly. Therefore, I am currently considering whether I should use a weed control fabric and if so, which thickness (50/100/150)???

I really can't imagine that anything could grow from below. And if weeds come through seeds from above into the open joints, then the fabric layer wouldn’t really help, right? Or would it?

Thank you in advance Waldemar

if you do not use a weed control fabric, you will soon have weeds growing in the joints, coming from the gravel, from seeds above. If you lay a fabric, it will take a little longer with the weeds, namely until your joints are somewhat filled with soil, sand, dirt. You will not have freedom from weeds with either option.

Best regards
Sabine
