Hello. I bought a house from the 50s. I removed the PVC floor and underneath a soft substrate became noticeable. Probably wood chip screed. Can I simply remove the adhesive residue with a stripper? Could it also be asbestos? I tried to ignite it. It just turns black but does not burn. I took a picture.

Hello questioner. Why should a stone wood screed burn, I ask myself? The majority of such a screed (which, by the way, is coming back "in fashion" today) consisted and consists of caustic magnesia and only about 8-10% organic components. Too little to bring these components to flame temperature. What you have found there, no one can tell you from a distance. It is certainly not stone wood screed, because that is either very firm or can be scooped out with a teaspoon under moisture stress. No joke! Whether it contains asbestos, well, a low-cost analysis under the scanning electron microscope can provide that. One cannot completely rule out its presence, as certain manufacturers used such an additive in magnesia screeds until the 1960s. "Don't get discouraged," says the saying. In this respect, first accept what is not proven as possible, but not as a fact. ------------------------------------ Regards: KlaRa

Hello. Ok. So the screed is pretty hard. I broke out the piece with a Bosch hammer.
