Is single glazing also thermal insulating?

Dear forum members,

we have purchased a listed building in which two single-pane exterior glass panes are broken. I want to replace them promptly before it gets even colder. This brings me to my question: Are there also insulating single glazing options – like those already used in cars for a long time? If yes and if installation makes sense, where can I get such glass? Does anyone have experience with whether these can be cut to size by oneself?

Best regards,

Thomas

No. It doesn't really work with cars either. The insulation comes from the gases in the spaces between the panes.

Firstly no, but for which rebate depth would you need it?;
secondly no: in cars it is thermal protection glass, it doesn’t insulate.

The insulation comes from the gap itself. The fact that the gas is not ordinary air is only to prevent condensation.

Since single glazing does not insulate, box windows were installed in earlier times.

Thank you for the answers. In fact, these are box windows, but even there (still) more insulation would be bearable.

The background with the car is that in the S-Class in the 90s (the armored W140 series) there was once double glazing as standard, which was replaced in later models by insulating single glazing. However, it was probably more about protection from heat than from cooling down.

The hint about the groove also makes sense, as no thick pane fits in there anyway.

Regards,

Thomas
