Is construction on the existing property feasible or is it better to wait?

Ah ok, yeah well that's something different. But does it really have to be such a large extension? Our house is similarly laid out, but with an attic, and our stairs to the upper floor could be equipped with a stairlift. Or we could hand it over to the kids and then move into an age-appropriate apartment.

270,000 is really quite a figure. Plus the 90,000 you still owe. I think you can prepare for aging appropriately with less money and living space.

If you decide that early, I don't think that's bad. Everyone can then also realize their own hobby room or something like that. Age-appropriate renovation is, as far as I know, also subsidized by the [KfW]. You should check it out.

So the size of the extension was originally the architect’s first draft, so that we could fit everything downstairs in the ground floor. Definitely something we can discuss again. But we actually don’t think it’s that much, do you think it would make that much of a difference cost-wise if it was, for example, 10 or 15 m² less?? An office should still be included if possible, we partly work from home, so that would be really great.
