Hello,

we have bought an old half-timbered house and the upper floor ceiling was insulated by the previous owner. Now I have taken a closer look at the construction because some parts were trampled and I am wondering whether this setup is/was correct.

Inside, the ceiling is suspended. Then about 25 cm of empty space and then beams, clay (I think), sand and so on. On top, cardboard was partly laid on the floor and then glass wool rolls. In between there are walkways made of Styrofoam – both 160mm. Additionally, there are Styrofoam beads in between. I am surprised that there is no foil or anything like that anywhere. When I asked, the previous owner said he was advised to do it this way because of the clay which acts almost like a vapor barrier. At the moment, everything looks dry but I am afraid that I will have mold here in a few years. The attic is not used and is relatively open and drafty.

I have attached some photos. Maybe someone knows whether I should leave it as it is or how I should proceed.
