Hello everyone,

we have bought a house from the 1950s and are currently renovating/refurbishing.

We have now removed the old door frames and would like to install new ones. However, when removing one frame, large holes appeared (see picture 1). The frame was nailed to wooden blocks. How can we now fill the large holes?

The other frames came out easily because there was a wooden frame around them. However, we would like to change the height, as it is currently only about 1.90 m high. Can this wooden frame remain and we only need to make the opening higher? (see picture 2)

Thank you in advance.

Best regards
Daniel

The holes can be filled with mortar and for the higher passage, the lintel must be moved. However, one should know what they are doing, otherwise in the worst case the ceiling will come down.

Only mortar? I would definitely mortar in one or two small stones, then plaster over it. Removing the lintel and chiseling out the stones, then rebuilding the lintel, I think that's very labor-intensive. If you do that, you have to support it, then fill the resulting holes where the lintel rests with stones again, and then place the lintel on top.... phew.

Thank you for the information, unfortunately increasing the door opening is unavoidable! The opening is really only a maximum of 1.90 m high and with my 2 meters I hit it every time if I don't remember to duck.

You get used to tucking your head in. I speak from experience. It's only a matter of time

However - no offense intended! - you seem to have little knowledge of such work. Do you have friends/family/acquaintances who can support you with your project? It won’t do you any good if you start tinkering now and end up with even more work and renovation effort later.
