I had my house clad with an external thermal insulation composite system made of Styrofoam and have now heard with horror about the increased fire hazard. The stuff acts like a fire accelerator, unbelievable that such an insulation material got approval. Is there a way to make existing polystyrene insulation "more fire-resistant"?

Only insulation materials that are not easily flammable may be used. In addition, a house burns from the inside out – the flammable thermal insulation on the outside of the wall becomes problematic when heated insulation drips above a window that is intended to be used as an escape route. For this reason, there is a recommendation to insulate the lintel area of windows with mineral wool. In the case of a single-family house, the escape route problem is less dramatic, as there are usually many escape options. In any case, you cannot make polystyrene insulation more fire-resistant.

You cannot recognize that afterwards; the craftsman's invoice may state that he charged for mineral wool lintel insulation - whether it was actually installed cannot be determined once the plaster has been applied.

The topic is currently heating up in the media. The state of Hessen wants to put the fire behavior of facade insulation made of polystyrene on the agenda of the [Bauministerkonferenz].
