In the garage, screed floor, or is there something better?

Hello,

I would need tips on what you would recommend as flooring in the garage.

According to the plan, I should have a 20cm floor build-up in the garage, but 10cm would be sufficient for me so that the height fits the car better.

Now the question is, would a 10cm floor build-up (with screed or is there something better?) be enough for underfloor heating?

The heating is not mandatory as I could also solve it with radiators.

Or is there something completely different for the garage? As a mechanic, there will also be some oil stains, so a "covering" has to be put in anyway.

The garage is 55 m2

Would be very grateful for opinions

Best regards

Hello,

if you want to install a screed, you have to use a composite screed and also produce it according to the rules (roughening the floor slab, priming, etc.) because otherwise, with the daily direct load from your car, it is possible for the screed to detach from the concrete slab. 10 cm is already a considerable thickness.

If you can still intervene, I would recommend making the floor slab directly 10 cm thicker. Statistically, this is usually not a problem to be classified as a structurally ineffective topping. You can then have this concrete roughened or smoothed. If you are applying a covering anyway, roughening is certainly sufficient. If you have it smoothed, you might possibly also just apply a coating that prevents oil penetration, etc.

Best regards Jann

Oh, personally I would avoid a heating system due to the resulting stresses if a screed is not installed as a floating screed. And floating is also not recommended for your load.

I would also do without heating. The garage is (almost) always frost-free.
For working on cars, for example, an infrared heater is sufficient.
There are many options for flooring depending on taste and budget (epoxy, tile, asphalt...).
Since you also mention oil, etc., I would suggest an industrial epoxy floor. Coordinate the required construction with the company carrying out the work. Presumably, you can make the floor slab thicker and then apply the covering directly there.

Very good! That's exactly how we did it, I can really only recommend it. Usually, you don't need screed then. However, the industrial floor is not cheap, but very robust and super easy to maintain.

Thanks already for your great answers.

Unfortunately, the garage is already built, I unfortunately overlooked that in the plan or didn't think about the fact that pouring 20 cm screed into the garage is not sensible.

so that's probably the best solution?

probably cheaper than filling the whole thing up again with 10 cm of concrete
