How to preserve humus?

Hello,

about exactly one year ago we started excavating the foundation pit for our house. Back then, we stripped the top layer of humus and relocated it from the construction site to a nearby meadow in a more or less wide pile. Although the house is now standing, it will probably be autumn before we level the garden and refill it with topsoil and humus. The pile has meanwhile become a nice nutrient bed for all kinds of "weeds." Now I am wondering whether I should pull all of it out and possibly sow it with something soil-loosening (e.g. lupines or mustard seed). Do you have any tips for me?
Thank you very much in advance!

Why? What do you want to do? Create an English lawn? Then you will most likely not get far without chemicals.

I would remove the roughest parts, then spread the soil, till it again and sow the lawn... keep it nice and short, that should help contain the weeds a bit. But if you have couch grass as a weed like I do.... no chance of getting rid of it except with the big chemical hammer.... Not a great idea if children are running barefoot in the garden.

Hello DerDa, no, it doesn't have to be an English lawn now . I'm just uncertain whether the humus will benefit from having been lying there for 1 1/2 years. I just want to do something good for it and was thinking about something that loosens the soil and possibly enriches nutrients. But if that's not really necessary, then I'll just leave it as it is, it doesn't bother anyone. I need to ask Mr. Gockel what quackgrass is... no idea if something like that is among the plants on the pile. Thanks & best regards MeisterBob

Hello,

From above green, long and narrow leaves, but in the ground lie meter-long, white roots. Not completely removed, they accompany a gardener’s entire life

Quackgrass cannot be completely removed.... totally impossible. We have dug up to 50 cm deep in places... quackgrass roots everywhere.

And the beautiful thing is that new grass grows from every 1 cm piece. So I have 500 sqm of quackgrass area... in Eastern Europe the roots are often mixed into flour after drying. Maybe I should open a bakery.... "The quackgrass rolls awaken the spirits of life"

What you could do with the pile of earth: dig it over so that everything is covered with soil, buy weed control fabric and cover the pile with it.... in a year or two you’ll have the best humus underneath. We are doing the same right now:

Exactly! Digging in physical labor, do not use a [Erdhächsler].

The latter does great work in the short term but only increases the weeds.
