Hello to all construction enthusiasts and professionals,

great that this forum exists. I am new here and my family has to embark on the building adventure, as one of our two daughters has a handicap and we cannot find suitable living space. Naturally, many questions arise.
So, we want to renovate an old house. In our case, this is cheaper than building new. Now we are wondering, is it cheaper to get various quotes from construction companies including materials, and then have the contract awarded to one of them, or can we save money if we find companies to do the building while we source the materials (windows, doors, roof tiles, etc.) ourselves as offers in the hardware store? - Who has experience on how to save costs without employing "Schwarzarbeiter"?

Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I would rely more on the [Bauunternehmer], because they buy very cheaply. That is certainly cheaper than if you buy everything in the hardware store. Because a contractor buys under completely different conditions and gets more discounts than you do as an individual customer.

I guess you will have no choice but to ask the companies for quotes and cost estimates, as they have completely different conditions when purchasing. It may be that one company can do it cheaper than if you buy the items individually at the hardware store.

When we built, the contractor provided everything, I had the impression at the time that he could really get it cheaper than I could myself. But of course he also wants to make a profit, but then you don’t have the work of delivering and making sure everything is on the construction site on time.

even though it is cheaper if you buy it yourself, it is quite a lot of work. I would arrange a flat fee with the [Bauträger], that is certainly easier. They can get prices that private individuals can only dream of, and there is still some profit left over.

Hi,
if you provide the material yourself and something is not in order during, while, or after installation, the contractor can refuse to take on the warranty. However, if the contractor installs HIS material, he MUST guarantee the installation and the installed material.
You also don’t go to the workshop with the car and bring the parts you think are necessary??
Basically, you can only negotiate well and for a long time, or do it completely yourself.
Best regards
CCB
