Hello,

we are planning ceiling spots and do not know how many should be installed. Are there any recommendations on how many are needed per sqm of living space? Are these spots also useful in the bedroom and children's room? Can they also be installed directly above the shower or is that spot too damp for it?

Best regards
Sabine

Depends on which ones are planned, there are numerous variants. Depending on mood or application, the number of spots and also the power are crucial.

That should be known by the electrician who installs the spots for you. As Mycraft already says: there are all kinds. I wouldn't install too many, so not for all rooms, because spots on the surface are not exactly cozy. You can set accents through row insets or here and there an accent, as main lighting for the hallway or bathroom, but in the living area you should rather rely on table and floor lamps.

Electrician? I wouldn’t expect too much from that. The electricians I know can connect the things, but have almost no understanding of illuminance, beam angles, accents, etc. For that, I would most likely visit a lighting specialty store, where they will do proper lighting planning for you.

If I had listened to the electrician back then, I would today have only illuminated 2/3 of the living room at rather low brightness. That really doesn’t have to be the case in the 21st century.

You can also manage the planning yourself, but then you have to read up on all these (rather technical) details, which also requires a certain basic technical understanding. Furthermore, corresponding simulation software would be advantageous, which you first have to be able to use.

By the way, there are indeed recessed ceiling lamps (!), which do not have a spot characteristic but illuminate diffusely.

We have so far had discussions with two electricians. One said that for the correct dimensioning, he would show the floor plan to a lighting planner (or something like that), who would then make a proposal for the quantity and arrangement of the spots for him.

In bathrooms, special low-voltage systems have to be installed as far as I know.

In bathrooms, 230V can be used.
