Good evening to the forum,

we have bought an old house by the lake and some renovation work is ahead of us.

First, I want to remove the textured plaster in the children's room and then wallpaper the walls. What is the best way to get the plaster off?

Best regards and thanks in advance for the answers

With hammer and chisel? Well, it depends on what's underneath, I guess some [Unterputz], which you'll have to remove. So just hammer and chisel and chip off down to the masonry, and then either a new smooth plaster or drywall on top.

well, I think you won't get around scraping it off. The plaster really adheres to its substrate, just wiping it off with a cloth won't work and I think depending on the substrate it could be difficult.

One possibility would also be to level the plaster with a filler. And due to the rough surface, the plaster also has excellent adhesion. I have already finished off quite a few walls this way.

Hi Haus am See,

Of course, it is a lot of work if you have to tear everything down. Therefore, I can only agree with Rufus's suggestion. If the textured plaster is not too coarse, I would also even it out with a filler. But only if the textured plaster still holds very well and is dry.

If this is a dispersion plaster, it can be removed using [Abbeizer]. Apply [Abbeizer] generously, wait for the softening time, then scrape off and rinse clean with water.
