Horticulture has been practiced since prehistoric times. Different types of gardens have developed all over the world. This development continues to the present day. The ancient Egyptians, Romans, Assyrians, Babylonians, etc.: they all devoted themselves to the art of gardening. One can say that the garden has accompanied humans for an exceedingly long time.

That is one way to put it, yes. Even in the Stone Age, when humans became sedentary, they took up the cultivation of plants. When humans were still hunters, they took from nature whatever it provided. Berries, fruits, mushrooms, etc. But since hardly anything can be gathered in winter, people began to preserve food in various ways. Through planned cultivation, harvesting could be done directly on site, and they also had more influence on the plants. There are various types of gardens: for example, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, herb gardens, or pleasure gardens. But there are also combinations of these, i.e., gardens where vegetables and flowers are combined, for example.

I find these hanging gardens interesting. So the idea sounds interesting. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the wonders of the world. But maybe there are modern gardeners who have picked up this idea again. I would be curious to know how to create such a garden. I believe they are terraces built in the form of steps where mostly "hanging" plants are planted, right?

hi,

these hanging gardens must have been truly breathtaking. I really wouldn't know if anything like that still exists today. but in ancient times, there were probably some of them. for example, the hanging gardens of Semiramis in Babylon. this was supposedly the very first large botanical garden ever.

best regards, Mara ;)

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Hello!

The city of Babylon was located in present-day Iraq. And the amazing thing is that this magnificent terraced landscape was located in a very barren area, in the desert. It is not for nothing that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were considered a wonder of the world. Semiramis was a Babylonian-Assyrian queen. Under her rule, the gardens were especially magnificent, and that is probably why they were named after her. Babylon was considered the most beautiful city of antiquity. Apart from the Hanging Gardens, there was another of the 7 wonders of the ancient world there: namely the city wall.

The Hanging Gardens were located in the middle of the city, at the foot of the palace. They were said to be 100 meters wide and 100 meters long. There were said to be 7 terraces. The walls must have been very stable because they had to bear an incredible weight. They were covered with reeds and asphalt and a double layer of bricks. On the bricks came a layer of lead. The reason for this was that moisture could not penetrate the masonry. Finally, a meter-high layer of earth followed. Even trees could grow on it.

Best regards,
Gardening :)
