Hello,

since we are allowed to build almost all roof types on our property, we are considering a green flat roof because we really like the modern look and the greenery is supposed to bring numerous benefits, for example in terms of insulation and phase shift. Unfortunately, I can't find much about the disadvantages; my wife's biggest concern is that pests and birds will settle up there and we will have constant problems, for example with bird droppings on the terrace and/or beetles, spiders, wasps in the house. What experiences have you had with your green roof?

We built with a flat roof, the only reason against the green roof was the extra cost. That would have cost us €55/m² net. With ~90m², that's quickly almost €6,000 including tax, from which I get little benefit. But we had no concerns about pests, etc. Why should we? How would they even get through the sealing?

The statics of the FD must be adjusted to the increased weight. The slope must be increased from at least 2% to at least 4% - which requires a different elevation elsewhere to achieve this. We have had the 9 x 6 m garage greened and are now waiting for it to sprout again in spring.

Along the house wall to the window?

How do you find the heat protection in summer? Brick or timber frame wall? Concrete ceiling?

I somehow have the fear that the flat roof heats up quickly without greenery?!

If it comes to that, you shouldn't have grass or similar around the house either, because they could come from there as well and go along the house wall to the windows...

Regarding heat protection, I can't say anything yet, we only moved in December.
Construction method is solid, brick and reinforced concrete ceilings and roof.
Last year, however, it was always pleasantly cool inside during the construction...

Your property is located in nature, and your wife will not necessarily have to make friends with insects, little beetles, dirt, and tiny little creatures, but she should expect to have daily contact with them. No matter what kind of roof you will have. Just a well-meant tip. Otherwise, I cannot provide an answer to your question.
