Hello everyone,
I (Wolfgang, 46, electrician) want to create a raised flower bed between my wooden terrace and the lawn area (which is 30cm higher), extending 5m along the terrace and 1m wide. The foundation is clear so far. The brick wall in stretcher bond should be 50cm higher than the terrace, so 20cm higher on the lawn side. The goal is for the visible upper part to be a single row. At one end of the bed there is a step as access to the lawn, here the wall will be closed/mortared from the terrace to the lawn. On the other side, there will be a privacy wall made of bricks. The flower bed will be filled with topsoil up to 10cm below the wall edge.
Now to my questions:
- Will the single-row brick wall in stretcher bond withstand 40cm of earth pressure?
- What happens in winter if it freezes?
- How do I protect the inside of the brick wall from moisture/wetness? The flower bed will of course be watered.
I would be happy if I could manage it with your help.
Best regards
Wolfgang

Masonry is only resistant to compression. Tensile and shear forces cannot be absorbed. This means the earth pressure will probably push your 11.5 cm thick wall away. With a 24 cm thick wall, it might possibly hold, due to the low height. Maybe L-shaped stones with facing bricks could be an alternative.

That's what I feared. I am considering raising the foundation 30cm behind the bricks, so to speak as a "neck support," about 10cm thick. If that is a possible solution: Do I need to do anything about moisture? Bitumen coating?

I have a question for clarification:
Klinker = Riemchen? Or are you talking about bricks?

A few years ago, we had a brick wall built at the old house in the entrance area as a barrier to the sloping lawn.
Two rows with a soldier course. The mortar used was trass cement to avoid efflorescence.

I recommend a concrete wall with a facing of halved bricks (similar to Riemchen). On top, a soldier course made of whole bricks. It holds up well and looks great. It gives the impression of a solid brick wall.

Hello EveundGerd,

Thank you for your contribution. The plan was to build with full facing brick (facing brick because of the better durability) without a finishing rolling layer, so that I have a 12cm "thick" visible brick edge. But then I have the problem with shear forces...

The rolling layer, like with everything, is purely a matter of taste.

You can also work without a roller coat, but without concrete it won’t work, and cladding concrete without a clean finish will attract dirt in the long run and looks ugly. Wall cap plates would be an alternative or, if it may be Mediterranean: [Bieberschwänze] as a finish. Not exactly cheap but stylish.
