We are building on a slope. The terrace in the basement is covered by the floors above. The floors above are supported at the terrace outer edge by concrete support pillars. We now want to expose the foundation supports of the pillars facing the valley towards the garden in order to have a piece of level lawn despite the slope. The structural engineer sees no structural problems but says that for a frost-free foundation of the footings, 80 cm of soil must remain in front of the pillar foundation. My question: Is it possible to achieve frost protection for the frost-free foundation by sticking suitable insulation material on the pillar foundations facing the valley, in order to build a raised bed in front of it that extends only 50 cm into the garden?

Can you upload a sketch? Basically, there is the concept of a frost shield where insulation extends beyond the base slab. Something like that could be applicable for you, but I am not sure if you are planning it correctly. It is important that the ground under the pillars remains frost-free.

I just made a sketch of what I understood from the problem... But it should represent the general requirements for frost protection. Otherwise, as WilderSueden already wrote, a frost shield made of insulation material. The frost only needs to have a minimum distance of 0.8 m everywhere down to below the foundations.

I couldn’t have made the sketch better, thank you! What matters to me is whether the blue line can be shortened if insulation is applied in front of the exposed foundation parts (behind the raised bed and below the raised bed)?
