We are building on a slope. The terrace in the basement is covered by the floors above. The floors above are supported at the terrace outer edge by concrete support pillars. We now want to expose the foundation supports of the pillars facing the valley towards the garden in order to have a piece of level lawn despite the slope. The structural engineer sees no structural problems but says that for a frost-free foundation of the footings, 80 cm of soil must remain in front of the pillar foundation. My question: Is it possible to achieve frost protection for the frost-free foundation by sticking suitable insulation material on the pillar foundations facing the valley, in order to build a raised bed in front of it that extends only 50 cm into the garden?
