Hello everyone,

I have some basic theoretical questions regarding the floor construction. Our project involves the modernization of an existing barn. The exterior walls/sandstone walls remain standing and have been reinforced with a foundation, and inside we will remove about 40-50 cm of earth.

For me, the question now is, exactly where or in which layer is the electrical installation usually planned?

A few years ago, new wooden beams were installed on the 1st floor and topped with OSB boards. How would the construction above look in this case (electrical installation/central ventilation/underfloor heating/screed/parquet)? And how many centimeters should be planned roughly above the OSB boards? Unfortunately, we do not have a high ceiling, so we are somewhat limited.

I would be very grateful for a few helpful tips.

Best regards Daniel

Hi,
I can only tell you how the structure is with us:
From bottom to top: concrete slab, vapor barrier (bitumen sheets), electrical and water pipes, insulation (styrofoam), underfloor heating, screed.

I’m not an expert, but I think it’s not good if the cables lie between the little stones. If they get compacted, they might press through the cable insulation and then you’re in trouble. I don’t think it’s crucial exactly where the cables lie now. I would plan them deep enough so that you can make the "curve" into the walls. Otherwise, I would just pull the cables over the moisture barrier and put an extra styrofoam layer on top (it’s like a puzzle then).

But I have no idea about ventilation either. We don’t have that. Overall, the floor structure on the ground floor with us is about 18 cm and on the upper floor 13 cm (insulation not as thick).
