Hello everyone,

we recently acquired a plot of land and are currently in the initial planning stages for our future home. For this purpose, we are currently trying ourselves, with a little experience (brother-in-law is currently starting to build), to create a first draft before we want to consult an architect or general/construction company.

The plan is a KFW 55 house including photovoltaics (approx. 4-5 KW) with about 150-170 m2 of living space. Planned on the ground floor is a large living/dining area, a guest room, as well as a WC with shower. Upstairs there will be 3 children's rooms as well as 1 master bedroom and a bathroom with a bathtub. The house will have a basement, but we have not yet given any thought to the floor plan for this. The garage/carport is to be constructed on the north towards the east.

The following open questions have arisen in our planning:

1) Staircase

[*]Is an L-shaped staircase the right choice?
[*]How should a staircase be optimally designed so that not too much space is wasted, but walking on it is still comfortable? We are therefore looking for the golden middle ground.
[*]Are there any experiences regarding width, height, overhang of the steps?
[*]Are there standard dimensions for precast concrete stairs that one should pay attention to?

2) Roof shape

[*]Which roof shape is the best choice from the points of view of energy (photovoltaics), cost, and spatial feeling? Below are our conclusions.
[*]Variant hip roof - Advantage: no slopes, cost-effective, can be built as a cold roof; Disadvantage: low pitch angle or area for photovoltaics
[*]Variant synchronous gable roof (approx. 30° pitch) - Advantage: favorable for photovoltaics; Disadvantage: For cost reasons, possibly only realizable with sloped roofs on both sides, large roof area which is hardly used if planned without slopes
[*]Variant asynchronous gable roof (approx. 30° / 22° pitch) - Advantage: favorable for photovoltaics, slopes on only one side (less favorable side regarding orientation/location), middle way between cost and attic space; Disadvantage: slopes on one side, appearance

I would be very happy about constructive ideas, suggestions, and opinions on our drafts.

Thank you very much in advance!

I don't understand "no slopes." The hipped roof is at most cost-effective compared to the clipped hipped roof, but certainly not compared to the gable roof. By "synchronous" do you mean "roof pitch congruent with ideal pitch of photovoltaic elements"? Take a look: - there, before the introduction to the topic of stairs, you will also find the questionnaire that is often requested to be filled out here.

I would forget the floor plan and start again from scratch. The entrance and staircase area is no good like this, too narrow and dark.

Best regards

What would I have to smoke to interpret anything there at all?

You don't need to smoke anything for that - she certainly means the bottleneck towards the Allraum [emoji2]
