Hello dear people,

I own and rent out a 20m² apartment, which is heated with a night storage heater from 1995. Now, the block looks pretty ugly and the control of a night storage heater is totally uncomfortable because you basically have to select your desired heating power a day in advance. Additionally, the thing has a fan and the tenant is annoying me by complaining that the fan annoys her.

I could have the thing disposed of for €100 and have a modern electric heater installed for another €100. In my opinion, that makes sense, as I believe it operates more efficiently than a 20-year-old night storage heater. Night storage power costs about 20 cents / kWh here vs. normal power at about 25 cents / kWh. The savings aren’t that huge and you are very limited in your choice of electricity provider.

How do you assess the whole thing???

Ask your tenant. She has to bear the 20% higher consumption costs, right? Otherwise, if the heating performance is good, why not?

Keep in mind that it won't look good under the stove if you've removed it. Maybe a few euros are needed to spruce up the floor there.

Also consider that the efficiency of electric heaters has always been very high and therefore hardly anything will have changed. (Even the first light bulbs were almost 100% efficient heating elements ;-)

What you save could only be the storage losses of the night.

However, this is just my layman's opinion - the heating engineer can surely tell you more about it.

He was more concerned about the ugly tank barrier and the lack of comfort

Hello. Have you ever checked if maybe one or two infrared panels would be the right choice?
