Hello dear forum!

Last year we were able to build a house in Berlin and now want to work on the outdoor areas. First, we want to take care of the splash protection/drip edge around the house. Due to the exorbitant costs for garden landscaping and civil engineers, we have decided to try the project ourselves initially.

We have already read extensively about the type of drip edge and know how wide it needs to be, how to build up the corresponding layers, and which curbstones we want. What is still unclear to us is the question of preparatory work on the base.. According to my research, the base should still be painted with bitumen. However, the question is how "deep" it should be painted. I dug a test hole and found that the pink insulation extends about 75cm into the ground. Does the entire part have to be painted?

I am uploading photos to make it easier to understand.

Best regards and many thanks in advance for your efforts!

Nothing is being removed down there anymore. They place something between the house wall/basement wall/foundation and the insulation. You don’t have to seal it again additionally. The base is already finished. Waterproof slurry and colored stone plaster. Now just apply the splash guard. Although normally you would still put a dimpled membrane between the pink insulation and the soil.

I see it the same way. These works are already done. Sheets with studs in front and all good. Just don’t make it too narrow and take gravel so that the water can seep well into the soil. Then a visible layer of your choice on top. “Corresponding layers” is probably overstated.

Thank you very much in advance for your quick help! How deep should I lay the [Noppenbahn]? Up to the bottom edge of the pink insulation? A little above the [Dichtschlämme] in height - right?

We have laid the dimpled membrane down to the bottom (end of your insulation) and then at the top to the point where the eaves edge ends. Then a row of curb stones was set. Between the house and the curb stones, gravel was filled in, then a dark fleece on top and finally large dark pebbles.

Well, if the 5cm bitumen coating down there is enough for you. The site manager told me that where soil, gravel, or crushed stone comes into contact, the bitumen coating should be "pulled up" to the top edge of the layer and then the studded membrane placed against it. The studded membrane is not a sealant, but purely mechanical protection...

But go ahead against the colored stone plaster, that will probably work great too.
