Hello everyone,

I want to build a double rod mesh fence around a part of the garden. Since I have a small natural stone wall on the border, I want to place the fence posts behind it. Now my actual question:

Since I have a 20cm earth auger and I find information everywhere that for the foundation a 30cm hole is absolutely necessary, I would like to hear your opinion on this.

Would a 20cm foundation also be sufficient? The fence has a height of 123cm.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

The fence will probably stay up for now. The 30 cm foundation is more permanent. In my opinion, the few extra hours of effort are worth it.

Get yourself a post hole shovel; with it, the right holes are quickly dug. We dug holes about 40cm wide for a double rod panel fence at the height. That definitely holds. Neighbors dug 20cm holes and just poured some ready-mixed concrete in there; the fence wobbles like a cow's tail.

All right, thank you, then it will be the 30cm. It was worth a try!

Hello everyone again. I wanted to dig the hole now, but I have realized that part of the garden is on compacted recycled material. I can't get through it with either the spade or a (manual) earth auger. Now my question is whether I need an excavator or if perhaps a petrol earth auger (2-person version) can manage it. Maybe you have an idea. Regards Zenjamino
