Is there a difference between Poroton bricks Wienerberger T10 filled and unfilled? Does one have advantages that are offset by the disadvantages of the other, or is one absolutely preferable? Our company builds with T10 unfilled. Is that up-to-date?

The filled brick insulates significantly better. However, this is usually not necessary unless [KFW 55/40] is an option.

The filled one has thicker webs and is probably significantly better in terms of sound insulation. However, you don't know what will happen to the filling in 20 years. There are people who claim that the perlite fillings settle over time, so in 20 years you might be living in a very poorly insulated house.

Whether that's true, no idea...

We originally wanted to build with T18, but then built with T14 (unfilled) because the T18 were not available. From today’s perspective, I should have insisted on T18; the T14 are already borderline when it comes to doweling and hanging cabinets. The sound insulation is also worse, but that doesn’t matter for us.

I would only use unfilled T10 in an absolutely quiet area, and you have to be aware that you will probably need adhesive anchors for hanging cabinets. With T14, the normal FU and UX Fischer anchors just hold.

Best regards,

Andreas

Sound travels faster through air (the contiguous air in the high voids, not the air in the bubbles), heat is better slowed down by density differences (constant "stop & go" between air and denser solid matter). Filling in the chambers can settle and cannot be refilled. Blowing in loose fill works in "closed" shells. I therefore have little regard for fillings of separate high voids.

I always wonder in these building material discussions whether the reasons against certain materials (in this case the potentially settling filling) are really relevant in practice or only correspond to theory or isolated cases. Especially since one should definitely first define what kind of filling it is about. For example, why should mineral wool settle inside the brick, as long as it doesn't get wet? Evil tongues say that when cutting perlite, it all crumbles out of the brick (YouTube videos look quite different – the stuff holds together). I believe there is also a lot of lobbying involved. All these websites on the topic of building seem to consist entirely of paid content.

If it is indeed the case that the filling settles, that means that in the upper part of the drilled holes there is again the same cavity as without filling. If that should then not be relevant, it would mean that the fuss with the extra effort and cost could be spared. And THAT would be relevant for me. I would be angry if I were such an additional spender, and then it would all be for nothing.
