Hello everyone,

today we received an offer from the local metal construction company for the interior railing of our 2x1/4 winding staircase. Data:

- The railing runs only inside the stairwell, not outside.
- The railing covers 2 floors and should support the stairwell for 1m on the top floor.
- Material: flat steel, 3 knee braces, 1 upper brace on which the wooden handrail is mounted
- Color DB703

The price is almost 10,000€.

I have never had a railing offered before, but the price shocked me extremely for what is actually a fairly simple railing (steel, not stainless steel, only inside, etc.).
Especially since the handrail for the exterior stairs, just under 2m round steel coated, also seems extremely high at 2,500€.

It seems to me I have hit a very expensive place here.

What do you think? What did you pay for your coated steel railing?

Thanks for your input.

Regards

I have to be a bit embarrassed now: We ordered the handrail from Lidl...
The cost was, I believe, 25€ per handrail, we needed 6 pieces from the basement to the upper floor...
Material: no idea, silver-colored metal, nicely rounded,
The pieces can be extended if needed and must be mounted by yourself.

However, we do not need a railing, just the handrail, which will run on the outside for us. It is not screwed on yet, but unpacked. It looks high-quality and feels good!
There was also a wooden version...

Since we do not have children, the handrail will not be excessively stressed and occasional grabbing to hold on to it will definitely be withstood!

I personally find that extremely expensive! Especially with straight metal runs without curves/bends or the like. What exactly is driving the costs so high in the offer?

To be honest, I don’t know. It feels like a few meters of steel (not stainless steel), welded together and coated. And in my opinion, the locksmith really outdoes himself with the handrail.

I’m curious to see a second offer, but I’m already looking for alternatives.

What is meant by two times 1/4 turns? That the steps become partially narrower?

Then you cannot simply install a straight railing but actually have to specially craft everything (= the curve). Wood is also involved and has to be bent if I understood correctly?

For two floors, I still find it too much.
