Why does this have to be done? What else happens to the base?

If the rainwater cannot drain through the soil into the ground, frost causes the standing water around the house to expand. As a result, it may or is very likely that the foundation or basement walls suffer from the pressure. Therefore, sand and gravel should be filled up to a depth of 80 cm, which is then covered above with coarse gravel or stones to prevent dirt from splashing against the facade during rain.
