Pressure-resistant maybe yes, but here bending stiffness or buckling resistance is asked for.
Also, dowels will not hold in the material itself, yet you can fasten that stuff to something solid.
I think everyone here wants to tell you: Stop the nonsense with the "botching."
Do it right from the start, then you will enjoy it for a long time.
If money is tight at the moment, wait and then do it properly.
I also see material costs here in the "new construction" as manageable; the "right" way just requires more labor.
