Hello,

we are building a semi-detached house and have underfloor heating in all living rooms.

We want to lay wooden floors ourselves completely on the 1st floor and attic.

What would you recommend to us more, laminate or click parquet?

What should we pay attention to when buying?

Of course, it must be suitable for underfloor heating.
Wear layer? How thick should it be at least?

I have seen that click parquet is available for about €30-40/sqm and is not as expensive as the reputation of parquet anymore.

Thank you very much for your help and experiences.

The cheap parquet really has very little wear layer and tends to get damaged down to the carrier layer. That’s what I have now in my [ETW]. With good parquet, the wood "lives," and dents and scratches are like laugh lines on the face. With cheap parquet, you immediately see something like chipboard shining through, which is more like a toothless grimace...

If you still have small children, I would rather take commercial laminate first. It holds up pretty well and is super cheap. But parquet is, of course, nicer both visually and to the touch.

we "still" have no children

What should the wear layer be at least for the parquet? at least 3mm?

What else do we have to pay attention to in order to distinguish good parquet from bad?

Is the same true for laminate? what should you watch out for?

Is click parquet even good?
we definitely want to install everything ourselves

Yes, I would say 3mm, although there are supposed to be good ones with 1.5mm as well. It probably depends on how hard it is. If you only see it in the packaging, it will hardly be possible, and you will probably have to rely on reviews. If you can see it live, I would pay attention to (geometric) irregularities, the straightness of the plank (especially tongue and groove). Also if cracks are already visible, that can say something about the storage of the wood. Are all the planks the same size, etc. Laminate is so cheap that I would possibly buy a pack beforehand and test it. I find click good. Some swear by gluing.

At first we thought we would install vinyl, but now we want to go for click parquet or high-quality laminate. There is click parquet with about 3mm wear layer (many have only 2.5mm, would that still be sufficient?) that costs around 30-40€/sqm. That would still be okay for us. High-quality laminate would be around 20-30€.

You have no idea, I don’t know all the parquet on the market - of course, both can be good. I would start at 3mm first and if I don’t find a look there that I like, maybe go down.

I claim you can get laminate cheaper as well. I have some from Kaindl. Apart from the limited number of designs, I find it very good.
