I have bought an existing property, which I will comprehensively renovate and then move into for my own use.

During the renovation phase, I continue to live in the rented apartment.

Can I still claim the craftsmen's costs for tax purposes, or is that only possible if I were already living in the house?

To my knowledge, that is only possible if you are already living in the house. Where is the problem with re-registering already?

Craftsmen costs can only be claimed in the owner-occupied residential environment. The rental apartment should therefore be painted before moving out and the new house should only be renovated after moving in :P. Make sure to have a proper invoice and always pay by bank transfer!
