Children's room facing north - your opinion?

Hello everyone

We are still working on the floor plan for our single-family house. Now we are considering a variant where a child's room is oriented towards the north. So there would be a large window facing north and a floor-to-ceiling slit window facing east. The view to the north is quite open, next house about 50 meters away.

What do you think about that? I'm worried the room will be too dark. I would prefer a west orientation but somehow it doesn't work out.

Thanks for your opinion.

Not everyone can sit next to the bus driver after all. In summer, you appreciate the north-facing orientation because you don't have to sit in the dark all day with the sunshade down to avoid having 28°C in the room in the evening. And whether it's really pleasant to always have the low evening sun in the room... I'm almost certain that our eldest, who is not at all enthusiastic about high summer, will want the room with the window facing north in a few years...

Little, for a very simple reason: (from an unfortunately image-free thread) as well as (from yet another image-free thread) and where the house at least has a ground floor pictured in post #3, with access to an attic mentioned – so we are talking about a property in Switzerland. Otherwise, we learn very little to be able to develop any thoughts on this.

I had a 24 sqm east-facing room under the roof with full gable windows, shaded by a loggia and two cherry trees in front. It was dark and dull – then I moved as a rebellious teenager into an 8 sqm storage room with a south roof window. Then my depressions were gone ;) I don’t know the options, nor can I advise on changing rooms or clear up other mental faux pas, since you don’t reveal anything about your project. Because: some room will get the great, bright location… which one? Maybe you, like others here, could introduce your project and answer the questionnaire?!

Depends on the age of the child - the nephew is 14 and deep in the gaming phase - any daylight is undesirable.

I think north-facing windows are great - they provide enough light but no direct sunlight. It is not the case that rooms facing north are automatically dark. The window should primarily be wide enough. Light comes from above. Floor-to-ceiling windows are less important when it comes to light.

What is meant by the slit window?
