We also had to deal with this topic. The old tiles were damaged and had cracks. The format was no longer current either, so we decided to lay new tiles over them. The new tiles are 4.8 mm thick, 45x90 cm, and have a modern gray-brown color. The floor was leveled and the new tiles were laid on top. This was done without dirt, dust, or grime. All of this was done without any problems and it looks like new again.
Best regards

Hello,

Thank you all for the many and good answers. What Annegret described is what we also had in mind. However, we had a tiler come who inspected everything. The old tiles were too loose and the floor is also not even. So the tiles and the floor do not meet the conditions. We will have the old tiles removed and then the floor will be leveled.

Best regards

Regina

As a rule, the old tiled floor can remain. This causes no stress, no mess, and also costs much less. But the floor must be well prepared, meaning well primed. I am into Slim fine stoneware, and it is available from a thickness of 3.5 mm. But here the subfloor must be perfect. However, this can be compensated up to 2-3 mm.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your tip. Covering the tiles would have been the best solution for me too. Especially because of the dirt. But about 60% of the tiles are loose and the new tiles won’t hold here. Now we are removing the old tiles and the tiler is coming next week.

Best regards

But for me, the risk would be too high that the tiles that are glued on simply won't hold. Then the work was in vain and the old tiles will have to be removed after all.
