Hello everyone,

We started renovating yesterday. So, wallpaper off and screed removed. Here and there a few unknown/unplanned things came up, even though it’s the parental home. Below are the pictures:

1. The wallpaper came off easily almost everywhere. Only at the slopes and the ceiling it didn’t come off well. Here it seems there is wood with cardboard (plasterboard cardboard) under the wallpaper. At least we are pulling off cardboard there. How can we remove it with as little damage as possible? Up to that point, the wallpaper came off about 90% without help. Moisten and peel off, then paint over?

2.+5. On the ground floor we partly have settlement cracks that were not visible before. Carefully knock off loose chunks and fill again. Then paint over. Or use painter’s fleece and then paint over? We would prefer painting over. What about the cracks, will they reappear after 3 weeks?

3. Behind the former tile splashback is a “hollow space.” I suspect ventilation from the laundry room. Fill that first, then clean everything around, level it and plaster smoothly with topcoat plaster and paint. Afterwards, mostly frosted glass is supposed to go here.

4. The same in green as 3. in a few places on the wall. Here you can still see some wallpaper remnants, does it have to be completely removed?

6+7: Area under the front door. When breaking up the screed something broke off more here. First clean well, then fill flush with a tougher mortar. Then I wouldn’t need a formwork panel in front. It is about 7 cm high, 160 cm long and a few cm deep.

Thanks a lot for your feedback

To remove the wallpaper, a bucket of soapy water and a sponge help. First, rub it with the soapy water and let it soak in a bit, then it should be easy to remove. I would simply fill settlement cracks with filler and sand them after drying, then finish as you like. I don’t think they will reappear if they were really only settlement cracks. The house should have settled by now. If they came back, you would have to check where and why.
