Hello everyone,

We bought a detached house (built in 1956) five years ago and at that time only insulated the sloping roof from the inside (89.5mm Linitherm Pal GK). Background: the sloping roof is built up with 12cm high pumice stone in the living area, which we would have had to remove with great effort at first. The current construction has a U-value of 0.211, although the data on the pumice stone is unclear.

Since we want to install a photovoltaic system this year, the question naturally arises whether we should also renew the roof at the same time. It is certainly already 30 years old and the underlay membrane is quite damaged in some places. Intuitively, I would have emptied the compartments from the outside on this occasion and replaced the pumice stones with 12cm of insulation between the rafters.

BUT: Our house is located in the flight path of a nearby airport. The planes fly over our house at about 3,000 feet altitude and with closed windows, the planes are definitely not disturbing. However, if I replace the pumice stones with mineral wool, I fear that the noise will press unhindered through the sloping roof into the living space. What is your opinion on this? Would an acceptable noise protection be achievable with 12cm of mineral wool? If I were to add a 2cm wood fiber board on the rafters, a U-value of 0.14 might even be achievable, which would meet the requirements of the BEG individual measures and be subsidized with 20%.

Thank you very much for your assessment.
