Hello,

I am renovating a house completely (gut renovation) over the course of this year. I would like to use smart home technology and the new "matter" standard seems good to me. Unfortunately, it is not yet available on the market. Therefore, I would like to keep the option open to later make the components in the house "smart" with matter-compatible devices.

What is the best way to proceed? Unfortunately, I am not very experienced and would appreciate some tips.

Things that come to mind regarding lighting and roller shutter controls:

[*]Install push buttons instead of switches everywhere
[*]Flush-mounted boxes should be deep enough (min. 60mm ?) to retrofit flush-mounted devices later

How should I proceed with motion detectors? Can these be made "smart" later or do I have to pay attention to certain selections already?

How should I proceed with a video doorbell? Are there any recommendations regarding the approach?

I would really appreciate some help.

Thank you,

Carlo

You should read up on network topologies, because it only makes sense with a star network, which you are pursuing.

The moment you do the electrical work, you have to make a decision. Otherwise, google Matter intensively. It reads as if you still have fundamental gaps in understanding. Matter is not a system, but is intended to combine various systems from the toy smart home world or to create a compatibility basis somewhere between IP and Zigbee. In general, it is aimed more at retrofitting people who place some WLAN actuators behind their existing switches or stick Zigbee switches directly on the wall. In your case, I would opt for a wired solution (which I would generally always do anyway). The current standard is KNX.

There is a "simple" solution: Install enough LAN cables and enough Wifi hotspots. Set control to KNX. With this, you can then control everything and make it truly smart. You could then also link the digital assistants.

Matter is designed for retrofitting existing systems and apartments, etc., where you have to "stick" something to the wall because you are not allowed to change/do anything to the basic substance (this also includes electrical wiring) without the landlord's consent and paperwork. Not to mention that even for a simple light switch replacement, of course, a trained electrician must come.

If you are already doing a complete renovation, you should go all the way.
