Hi,

even in the phase before setting up the garden areas, a bit of rough maintenance is already necessary so that everything doesn’t get too overgrown. Unfortunately, the spindle mower is overwhelmed by the height of the meadow, and the tool of choice is the 'Sense'. You don’t want to disturb the neighbors unnecessarily, and in the heat, mowing is only tolerable late in the evening.

What to pay attention to when choosing a scythe?
And - should the cuttings be removed / gathered / or left lying on the mowed ground?

How do you maintain the tool? I’m not a scythe person yet (and certainly not The One!), and my property still has to survive until construction begins...

Best regards I.

Depending on the size of the property, I would rent such a thing. The good ones usually cost 400 €. I bought a simple 1 HP string trimmer. About 100 €. It’s okay, but rather unwieldy for large properties. I need about an hour for my 500 sqm meadow.

Thank you, thank you, but it doesn't work with a motor - the neighbors wouldn't be very happy if I started the motor early in the morning on the weekend... It has to be mowed traditionally...

How and when do the neighbors mow so that no noise disturbs the blackbird?

Quite simple - when I am at work... When the whole project is completed and I then live on site, I can also reschedule the mowing times to socially acceptable hours. At the moment, that's just more difficult. On the other hand - I don't need to mow as regularly either, the neighbors like the meadow - for now...

And when do your future neighbors work? Or don’t they?! I do find it very considerate of you to show so much thoughtfulness, but I think you underestimate or overestimate other beings of your kind. Mowing is the favorite but also the least favorite child of a homeowner... and is primarily celebrated in the evening hours and on beautiful Saturdays... This also applies to retirees! I think you are making a problem where there is none. That a scythe is the best tool to slash very tall grass is probably true. Leave it lying afterwards, that’s how the farmer of our neighboring meadow does it. By the way, he goes at it with bigger (and louder) equipment because he owns the machines ;)
