Our basement will be built soon and the contractor recommended concrete partition walls to me. The brick partition walls I planned could cause problems, according to him, if the basement ever floods. We have highly gravelly soil here and I can well imagine that during heavy rain water will push in from outside – flooding not excluded. What about brick partition walls, don’t they dry out quickly again if they have been underwater? Should I really choose partition walls made of concrete?

So: The approach is wrong! If you already know in advance that water could enter the basement, you have to secure the exterior basement walls (i.e. waterproof them) so that water cannot penetrate. If the waterproofing of the exterior basement walls is planned and executed according to the expected water load, the material of the interior walls does not matter. Whether you choose concrete or brick walls? Both would get wet (if water enters); concrete then has to dry just like brick walls (whereas with masonry basement walls, a bitumen sheet can be inserted into the second mortar joint to prevent absorbed water from rising).

This question arises for us as well. Well, we have no worries about the water, except if there is a spring tide. We want to choose a watertight concrete. The architect said that would be the right solution.

Are there other experiences?

Yes, we also have this concrete. I also initially wanted brick walls, but I changed my mind on advice. That was the best solution. So, recommended.

Actually, it doesn't matter what is used. Whether bricks or concrete, both get wet. I think the sealing is what really matters. If mistakes are made here, water will penetrate everywhere.

I see it similarly. Both can work if done well.
