Hello everyone,

I would like to hear about your experiences with the different bathroom materials. This mainly concerns the washbasins, shower trays, and bathtubs (toilets maybe as well?).

With which material (roughly in the same price range or did I get it wrong?) have you had positive and negative experiences:
- Steel enamel
- Ceramic
- Sanitary acrylic
- Mineralwerkstoff scheidet für mich weger der überduchschnittlichen Preise eher aus.

What would you prefer for the washbasin or for the shower tray / bathtub and for what reason?

Thank you very much for your answers and I am really glad, after reading along for a long time, to finally actively request your expertise. Great forum here

Ann.

We quickly excluded sanitary acrylic/plastics when searching for bathtubs. It didn’t feel high-quality, somehow soft and unusually flexible. It also scratches easily and the surface then appears dull. So for the tub, we went the classic route with steel enamel.

Sanitary acrylic is practically the material that gives slightly when you step into it at the hardware or sanitary store, the shower tray wobbles and you really think you are stepping onto a cheap fragile plastic dish. Okay, together with the susceptibility to scratches, sanitary acrylic will also be ruled out.
Thanks

The advantage of steel enamel over ceramic is also that you cannot chip it (as is unfortunately always the case sooner or later with ceramic sinks), right?

Enameling can - if it goes badly - also chip off.

For the tub, we chose steel enamel. Easy to maintain, it can't scratch or discolor easily, and it just feels high-quality.
For the sinks, ceramic. In my apartment, I also had a steel enamel sink, but currently, we no longer liked the offered sinks.

so in my current rental house there are unfortunately already two chips in the ceramic sink and I hope the steel enamel products are not so susceptible to that. Has anything chipped off the enamel in your apartment?

Ceramic is standard and has proven itself for decades. Steel enamel washbasins are exotic for the bathroom. Who even makes something stylish there?

When it comes to shower trays/bathtubs, it’s a matter of belief. Both variants serve their purpose. Acrylic is lighter (more flexible) and feels warmer. Steel enamel is somewhat more expensive and more solid. For the bathtub, I wouldn’t mind either way, but for the shower tray, I would prefer steel enamel because the shower tray no longer moves on its feet (which can be interesting for the connection joints to the wall).

P.S. If you ever get scratches in a steel enamel bathtub, you’ll see them forever. With acrylic, they don’t stand out.
