Hey,

maybe someone can help me out.

1.5-story house with a gable roof and collar beam construction.

What does an attic floor look like? I see the beam construction when I am in the attic, and from below, that is the view from the attic floor, drywall panels are installed as the attic ceiling. So from above I see the drywall panels, or a vapor barrier? Does that mean in this situation you could only balance on the beams? To make the attic walkable, is the intermediate space simply left empty, or is it filled with ....? If filled, isn’t there a weight problem that the drywall panels would have to bear?

Thanks for shedding light on this

The construction you described does not seem sensible to me, nor to anyone in practice: one will cover a walkway with planks / tongue and groove boards; and insulation will probably be installed in the top floor ceiling, at least in a storage attic rather than including it in the "thermal envelope" and consequently heating it almost as well: love letters, Christmas tree decorations, and seasonal clothes do not need to be kept warm.
