You can either drill holes yourself in regular glass or have them drilled. Screw them in and you're done. I wouldn't just lay them on loosely. But there are good glaziers. Otherwise, I would order the glass plate online with holes as ESG glass. That works quite well and isn't that expensive.

Why not? It's common practice! I would consider whether glass fits with the old wine barrel. Of course, it's a matter of taste. But perhaps inserting a suitable glass into the recess would be visually more appropriate (merging barrel and top) than placing it on with another material (holder) and an artificial overhang.

That may be true in a childless retiree household, but as soon as there are children in the house, I wouldn't place a loose glass top on an old wine barrel. But well, everyone can do as they please.

What are you talking about? If you're worried about danger to children, then don't get a barrel, it could tip over, and don't take anything made of glass, it could break. Glass has a strong own weight, that's fine!

So a round glass plate with 8 mm thickness on a wine barrel weighs about 14-16 kilograms. That just doesn't work with laying it loose.

Reading is not your strength either? I didn’t write anything about "placing on," but rather about "putting in."
