Hello everyone,

My girlfriend and I have looked at an older settlement house (brick) from 1970 that we really like.

We plan to renovate the house gradually and want to lay new electrical cables and install a new fuse box with an RCD from the start.

We actually wanted to make the channels for the electricity ourselves to save costs, but we have now read online that plasters from this period can contain asbestos. Unfortunately, I can't find any concrete information online about whether we are still allowed to do this ourselves (if that is the case) or not.

Does anyone know more about this, or how did you handle it in your case?

I asked my grandfather about it (trained plasterer) and he cannot remember ever having asbestos in plaster.

Does this apply at all to normal wall plaster or only to fireproof areas, e.g. near the heating?

Kind regards

I would be very happy to receive replies, I can also provide more information about the house if desired/needed

70s? Then the thought of asbestos in the plaster wouldn't have crossed my mind at all. I hope that's enough as an answer ;), otherwise have a chemical analysis done.

According to Wikipedia, asbestos was only banned in the FRG in 1979.
Could therefore still be contained.

Uh, no. Asbestos was installed until the 90s. More precisely, until 1995.

A meteorite could also fall on your head.

The probability of asbestos in normal wall plaster is actually vanishingly small. Either relax – I would never give it a second thought with normal interior plaster – or have samples taken and analyses carried out.

Asbestos was much more frequently used in other places. You have to look more there.

My childhood home was built in 1960 and at that time, from today's perspective, a whole series of poisons were incorporated. We kids removed glass wool ourselves, took off the asbestos roof from the shed, etc., then there were vacant houses that were painted with Xyladecor, etc., ultimately many building materials would fall through today's filter. For the interior plaster, they probably chose the simplest and cheapest option and that was certainly not asbestos. My colleague had an indoor air analysis done after he sprayed way too much insecticide. However, an excess of various poisons was found, which probably came from paint, furniture, insulation, floors, etc. Since then, he has been sleeping more restlessly....... but the main thing is the mosquitoes are gone. Asbestos was rather used in single-family house constructions on the garage roof.

And are you sure not to confuse asbestos with alabaster?
