Are special adhesive and primer really necessary for 3D wall panels?

I want to install 3D wall panels on a wall in my house. The manufacturer recommends the very expensive special adhesive (of course) and the also expensive primer. Does anyone have experience with the panels, can I possibly use alternative products for installation?

Hello Sebastian, from your post I understand that you plan to use panels made of bamboo fiber and sugarcane. Since I am responding here as a DIYer, I would strongly recommend using the products recommended/prescribed by the manufacturer. Adhesive and primer are matched to the product. The primer primarily serves to basically "seal" the panels, meaning it should largely prevent the panels from moving. You have probably already read up on preparation, processing, priming, and final coating. How do you want to install them? With or without joints?
