Hi everyone,

for us, the final stretch is slowly coming into sight. As it looks, the floor will be tiled next week, then the painter will be in the house for two weeks, and after that, it'll be our turn to lay laminate/parquet.

I’ve quickly sketched in which direction the laminate/parquet could be oriented. Does that make sense, or does anyone have a better idea? Laminate should always be laid lengthwise to the direction of the light, but parquet crosswise?!? Is that correct?

The laying direction of the tiles is shown in blue, laminate in orange, and parquet in red.

The orientation of the tiles results from the slope of the floor-level showers and is thus basically predetermined on the ground and upper floors. But it seems okay considering the lighting arrangement as well.

The orientation of the laminate in the basement and the parquet on the ground and upper floors still needs to be discussed….

Thanks and best regards,

Andreas

Hello Andreas, I just saw your thread. I find it a bit difficult to judge. Over the years, the quality of laminate and parquet has improved, which is why the direction of installation has actually become secondary with high-quality floors. For me, the entire room concept would be important for deciding the installation direction, such as how the furniture is arranged, how the wall design is planned, and so on. Then, in my opinion, the "character" of the floor should also be taken into account, such as the texture, the type of wood (with laminate, which decor), light or dark, matte, glossy, with V-groove... Of course, one should be aware that when installing perpendicular to the light direction, joints, seams, and grain become more noticeable than when installed with the light direction. My advice would be to simply take planks of parquet and laminate at different times of the day and lay them in different directions next to each other to see what effect it will have later. Then you will be certain how it will look afterwards and what you like.

One should also consider the following. If you do not want an expansion joint at the doors, then the meter number specified by the manufacturer for jointless installation must be strictly observed. Our laminate from the company Parador may be installed without joints up to 12m lengthwise and 8m widthwise. This can also be a reason for the installation direction.

Hi,
just as feedback: we have now installed 70 sqm of laminate and 130 sqm of parquet in a wild action from Friday noon until today noon... what a hard job, why didn’t I join the Foreign Legion instead... that would have been easier..
But it turned out nicely, apart from the stress with the parquet supplier. Photos to follow...
We installed it exactly as it was written on the note, that also worked out best in reality.

Best regards,

Andreas
