While lumps of mortar can be chipped away, a "veil" is known to be only a thinly dried film. Naturally, it is alkaline and therefore can primarily be removed only with acidic cleaning agents. If you are afraid of chemicals, you should, for example, stay away from COLA. Holding a litmus paper in the drink shows a pH of 1 (strongly acidic). So take (this is meant seriously) a bottle of COLA, pour it over the affected area, wait about 10 minutes, and then wipe up the grime with a cloth.
