What does equity mean? How much money should I save?

Hello dear house building forum users,

I stumbled upon this forum by chance and thought I’d take the opportunity to ask my question and hopefully get some useful answers/advice or tips.

First, a few words about me: I will finish my training as a pediatric nurse next year (after that I plan to do further training in pediatric intensive care). I am 20 years old and am considering building my own house with my partner in a few years (around age 25) (not buying!). Since the beginning of my training, I have been saving about €500 every month and plan to continue doing so for a few more years.

To get to the point :D How does building a house work, what exactly does Eigenkapital mean, and how does the house building process go? Loan etc.? Do I have to save a lot of money beforehand to be able to afford my own house? I’m not quite clear on this yet!! I will soon go to the bank to get advice, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to inform myself a bit beforehand!

What I would like to add, it may sound naive that I am already thinking about this now, but I believe it is never too early to think about something like this.
