Good evening everyone,

I have the following concern:

I am planning to remove a load-bearing 11.5 cm wall made of solid sand-lime bricks.
For the 3.1 m opening, the structural engineer has specified an HEB 160, but he is concerned that the brick may give way under the weight of the beam – therefore, he recommends a 60 mm square tube with 160 mm top and bottom plates as supports on both sides.
I would now support the ceiling from both sides of the wall, then chisel out the slots for the supports and place and anchor them on the concrete base. Then chisel out the slot for the beam, place the beam, and fill the top with mortar (correct so far?).
Now the actual question: How can I align the beam and the supports so that they stand straight and at right angles to each other? I would have the supports welded – or do I have to hope that the work is done neatly and then just "place them together as they come"?

Thanks and regards
Pascal
