Underground cable outside for electric courtyard gate: 3x1.5mm² or 5x1.5mm²?

Hello,

we would like to have an electric sliding gate installed in our driveway. Currently, the foundations for this are being created. The manufacturer of the gate has specified that a NYY-J 5x1.5mm² underground cable must be laid on site.

However, when the house was built, we unfortunately laid a 15m long NYY-J 3x1.5mm² underground cable to the gate.

Wouldn't that work as well? Or what else is the 5x cable needed for instead of the 3x cable at the gate drive? I would rather not ask the gate manufacturer, as they will surely insist on 5x1.5.

Best regards, Tim

With 5 conductors you have three phases, with 3 conductors only one phase. If the gate needs three phases, you now have a project-delaying problem. But stupid to lay only three conductors, the price difference is about 10 cents per meter.

Maybe 1-2 wires are needed for "control" as well. The manufacturer will not demand 5 wires for no reason. You should follow up on this now, otherwise you will have a bigger problem.

If he does that, it is certainly not to annoy you, but because his system requires it. Be sure to get in touch with him, maybe he can still order another motor/controller...

Hello

I can only imagine that a wire is needed for control. Three-phase power is obviously not required.
And a wire (in the conduit) is easier to install than a 5 x 1.5 cable. I would also talk to the gate manufacturer. Before the foundations are in place.

Well, the gate manufacturer is only indirectly involved. The motor manufacturer is the one being asked.

But actually, I don’t see any problem; the gate manufacturer can just get/supply a motor that runs on 3x1.5 and install the suitable rack.
