The old door frame has been removed. Does the door jamb need to be renewed?

Good day. We want to replace the doors at our place. After removing the old frame, I am unsure whether it can be left as it is so that a new frame can be installed. I look forward to your opinions.

Best regards, Jens

Since you are asking for "opinions" and not explicitly for technical reasons: that's what God invented expanding foam for.

I wouldn't do anything there.

Nobody sees it anyway, and what is behind the door frame will never win a beauty prize...

Spontaneously, I first thought: "broken out" would have been the fitting word. But compared to , I would almost call this door reveal "trustworthy." However, this view reinforces the suspicion expressed there (not by me) that the house has a wide range of "construction years." Maybe you should ask the city archive or local chronicles what is said to have stood on this plot for at least decades. The only thing "certain" is: 1972 never ever. In which federal state is this house located?

All right. Then I will now look for a carpenter. Thank you very much!

The house is from around 1935. The year of construction was allowed to be changed because it was demolished down to the foundation walls in 1972 and rebuilt/expanded.

Measure the inside dimension of the door opening first and let us know.

Does a modern door frame with DIN dimensions fit in there at all?
How big is the casing, that is the lateral overlap?

The old door frame was plastered in. Looks like it’s from the GDR to me. Western doors don’t fit into GDR door openings. They were smaller, so you have to enlarge the door size. It may be that you have to plaster a bit on the side first so that the new frame fits and is flush with the wall. I wouldn’t do it just with expanding foam.

But send the measurements first.
