Table leg Ikea Billsta screw too narrow?

We have the feeling that with the table leg Billsta the threads for screwing the base plate to the support leg are too far apart or the screw is too narrow - meaning: no matter how much you crank, nothing connects.

Did we misunderstand something? Or are there similar observations?

Maybe a product defect... Measure the inner diameter and the outer diameter. Does that fit?
