Hello

I’m not sure if my topic is in the right subforum:

Since my very old wastewater pipe (made of metal) has a crack and is dripping slightly in 2 places, it now needs to be partially replaced. The plumber who inspected it wanted to use a plastic pipe for this, which would be connected at the ends to the still intact parts of the existing metal wastewater pipe.

I’m considering whether I should have it done in plastic now or continue with metal as before. What are the advantages/disadvantages of plastic pipes compared to metal pipes? The metal pipe just seems much more robust to me....

Thank you very much for tips!

Plastic does not rust.

Modern plastic is just as durable, unless you frequently pour acid into it. What are the price differences? If you are unsure, it's best to get another expert opinion – asking doesn't cost anything.

Plastic does not rust, but over time it still becomes cracked and brittle. Of course, nowadays there are modern plastic alloys that are very durable and resistant. Both have advantages and disadvantages...

You have to form your own opinion (cost-benefit factor).

The difference between plastic and metal wastewater pipes is mainly the noise level, but also the price difference. If you place a high value on sound insulation, then you should definitely insist on a metal pipe. Otherwise, there is also the Silent PP from Geberit. It is also made of plastic but already comes quite close to the noise values of an SML wastewater pipe.

You don’t have to worry about durability with either type of wastewater pipe.
