Hello everyone!

You get yourself an American Staffordshire Terrier specifically to protect your future home... and it turns out he would much rather cuddle down any trespasser than sound an alarm when someone enters the property uninvited...

So Plan B is needed!

(I hope the irony was noticeable, we knew right away that our buddy is a good guy! ... :-) )

We have been thinking about a few security cameras. Just for peace of mind. Especially lately, known people and friends have experienced more break-ins or damage to their cars...

Does anyone have concrete recommendations for security camera systems?

It should be kept as simple as possible and not cost a fortune. We were thinking of 4 outdoor cameras with night vision.

An acquaintance got the PREDECESSORS (7 years ago) of a set from a Goliath HDCVI set and is enthusiastic. The whole set would cost about 300€ with 4 outdoor cameras, plenty of cables and a recorder. Is that something?

The whole thing would then be a standalone system...

Is there something like that possibly also for a regular home network? That the whole thing runs over network cables?

I’m curious what you can recommend to us.

Yes, simply IP cameras with an NVR, e.g. AXIS, Hikvision, Mobotix, etc., with POE, then you can easily use the existing LAN for it. But you should still operate it independently in a separate network which is then managed by the NVR.

This is a complex topic.
With cameras, the price often reflects the quality.
Axis is highly recommended. What exactly should be monitored? Installation not too high, angle, distance...
If you have a NAS, it can be secured on it (e.g. Synology or Qnap). POE switches must be housed securely and have a separate power supply (UPS).
Cameras with good motion detection are expensive. Motion detection on the NAS requires performance and is not at the same level.
Good cameras quickly cost between €200-€1000 each.
In general, cameras are part of a security concept and not a standalone solution.
A dog creates significantly more deterrence (even if he’s a cuddly fighter ;) )
Windows and doors at least RC2. You have to be a harder target than the neighbor. Fear is, however, a bad advisor.
Since you apparently don’t want to provide the budget for a proper solution, I would rather leave it. Max dummies installed.
With a dog, you already have sufficient deterrence.

One or more cameras do not protect against unwanted visitors. They don't deter either, they rather attract them. More important is securing windows and doors so they don't get in at all.

What do you expect from the surveillance? The police are of course happy to take the recordings afterwards, usually shadowy figures can be seen ;)

Safety and the feeling of security are two different things. I think it is good that you talk about the feeling of security. If cameras help you with that, that is absolutely right. My wife finds light important, so we are installing some lights with motion detectors around the house. Noise also scares off intruders in the form of a siren. Currently, we live in an area that can be described as a hotspot for burglaries – the outskirts of a commuter town near Düsseldorf, perfect motorway connection for a quick escape to Holland. On average, there is one burglary every 6 months in our row house community with about 50 houses. Neither us nor our immediate neighbors have been targeted yet (dog), while others have been hit three times. The dog is really great,
