Hello everyone,

quick and concise question.

We have old wooden beams from the 70s in the attic. They were previously covered and are now visible.

I have thoroughly cleaned them with a satin brush and exposed the grain.

The beams look quite okay now, but they probably still need oil.

To oil them well, I should probably sand them beforehand, but then the nice natural texture of the wood is lost again.

The question now is, after brushing, is sanding before oiling absolutely necessary?

In my opinion, no. Show a picture of the bars.

Is there a reason for oiling, I would rather protect with wood glaze against insects and wood pests

Are these exposed beams in a converted attic (living space) or did you take the time to do some tuning in the cold attic? Cold attic: insecticide or something? Living space: with oil I have had bad experiences with wooden furniture... I would probably use a (transparent) glaze.
